There’s an art and science to composing music for the piano, guitar, or flute. It’s about using chord progressions, scales, etc. But I want to start composing some beats for my snare drum…marching snare specifically. Are there a few specific tips for that?

When I first stared playing drums at 16. I found it by accident. I didnt go looking to be a drummer really. I stumbled across it because someone stole my guitar at 15. When I first started playing drums. I didnt take drum lessons at that time, I just jumped right into drumming and ran with it & started trying different beats, that’s all. I really sucked at first, but it took me about 2 years before I really got better. You gotta understand, I was practicing at 2 hours a day, 7 days a week so this is where all my time and effort went back then. I simply was responding and reacting to what my imagination was trying to do….its just about being patient, working on your musical craft and discovering & devoping and honing your musical gifts, that’s all. If you take lessons, that helps too. I was never ever above taking lessons to be snobbish, that’s not my style. I was just so obsessed with drumming that I really forgot to take drums lessons because I was having so much fun with it. If you can afford drum lessons, by all mean…go for it!
In my case, I couldnt read numbers on sheet music, that’s all and that is my weakness. This is why I didnt take lessons, I was too busy creating all these drum beats in my mind. Its part of being a musician..you have to experiment and see what works for you and what doesnt work for you in your drumming style. I would learn
Military Marching Corps beats & learn Jazz drumming. Learn syncopation rudiments too. Learn basic rudiments like:
Paradiddles, double paradiddles, flams, ratamacues, 5 stroke rolls,
7 stroke rolls, etc. This will be your basic foundation as a drummer.
Also, buy yourself a good Metronome too. They work wonders! Hope this helps and good luck on it…
Just get a good beat going and right in down in note form on sheet paper and there you go… its easy and fast…
